POSITION SUMMARY:                               

This position is responsible for assembling and breaking railroad cars, assisting switch operator within the Railroad Facility-Security Department, and working with the Terminal Tool Room and General Labor group.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Must learn the company’s rail switch functions within 90 days
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak Intermediate English
  • Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team-oriented work environment
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
  • Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions
  • Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours including nights, overtime, weekends, and holidays

Preferred

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Perform all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines
  • Follow the Railroad Rules and Regulations as required by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) , Department of Transportation (DOT), & Jacintoport to assure safe operations
  • Inspect all equipment on railcars, such as handbrakes, air hoses, wheels, and knuckles prior to movement
  • Perform designated switch task of preparing to build the train, assembling and breaking empty or full railcars, boxcars, and hoppers
  • Perform designated task of traveling with railcar or locomotive, including mounting, and dismounting of equipment to protect the movement of the train
  • Maintain communication with Locomotive Engineer when coupling and uncoupling railcars or when notifying distance of each railcar, using safety hand signals and/or two-way hand-held radio
  • Follow and understand necessary paperwork associated with the movement of the railcars
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surrounding (i.e., vehicles, equipment, etc.) at all times.

Secondary

  • Provide support to the Terminal Tool Room & Gear Room, assisting with the receiving and distribution of supplies
  • Provide support to the Bags Department, opening and closing railcar doors
  • Provide support to the Security Department by escorting visitors and employees, utilizing golf cart
  • Provide support to the Bags Department
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Subjection to DOT/FRA physical screening is required along with other tests as applicable
  • The employee is frequently required to climb in and out of the equipment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion, pinch and finger dexterity.
  • The employee is continuously required to exercise eye-hand and eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • The employee is frequently required to grasp, forward bend and forward reach.
  • The employee frequently is required to talk and/or hear
  • The employee is frequently required to stand and walk
  • The employee occasionally required to sit, lift, carry, squat, twist and overhead reach. 
  • The employee must frequently push and pull, up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

 

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Report safety hazards

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from the Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineer and does not exercise supervision over any other position.

 

CONDITIONS:

  • Outdoors, exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts
  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts
  • The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
