POSITION SUMMARY:                

Perform general physical maintenance work (wash containers, sweep floors, etc.), open container doors for agriculture inspections, assist mechanics with painting and minor maintenance duties; maintain awareness of all surroundings (i.e. trucks, people, etc).  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Experience and ability to use common hand and power tools such as pressure washers, screwdrivers, saws, drills, wrenches, and hammers.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Possess organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to obtain internal forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.

Preferred

  • One (1) year of experience operating a forklift at OSHA standards.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Sweeps, washes and cleans empty reefer containers.
  • Inspects empty reefer containers for damage.
  • Tags all reefer containers for either their readiness, need for repair, or washing.
  • Assists with the agriculture inspections.
  • Drives a company truck to the work site.
  • Maintains awareness of all surroundings (i.e., trucks, people, etc.) at all times.

Secondary

  • Assists mechanics with pre-trips of reefer container units and chassis.
  • Transfers cargo from one container to another as needed.
  • May rearrange cargo inside a produce load in order to have the load fumigated.
  • Assists with the staging and strapping of vehicles.
  • Maintains a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards.
  • Performs general maintenance work of the Reefer Mechanic area inside and outside.
  • Operates a forklift to empty yard garbage bins.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Subjection to physical and/or DOT screening may be required along with other tests as applicable.
  • The employee is continuously required to stand, walk, reach forward and grasp.
  • The employee is frequently required to bend forward, twist, reach overhead and exercise eye-hand coordination.
  • The employee is frequently required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, squat, pinch, exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion, finger dexterity and eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • The employee must frequently lift, carry, push and pull up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Reports directly to the Reefer Mechanic Header and Foreman.  Does not exercise supervision over any position.

 

CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
  • Moderate vibration with use of hydraulic seating system.
