POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the maintenance of all Seaboard and Terminal rolling stock equipment non-self-propelled within the Terminal. QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience of a maintenance crew, experience repairing and restructuring equipment, including Containers, flat beds & Chassis
  • Must have prior experience supervising a welding crew, have advanced Stick and MIG welding experience
  • Must have prior experience in basic intermodal electrical repair and maintenance
  • Must have knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance repairs and replacement
  • Must be able to operate equipment required for repair and maintenance.
  • Must have basic computer skills to enter work orders and maintenance forms in DST system
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and speak intermediate English
  • Must have the ability to read, write and perform basic math
  • Must have the ability to work from instructions and technical manuals
  • Must have the ability to perform/ give written and verbal orders
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information
  • Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team oriented work environment
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary:

  • Perform all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines
  • Follow the Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) guidelines as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), to assure the safe operating condition of all chassis, and flat-bed trailers equipment for road use
  • Perform systematic inspections, restructures, estimations, and produce work order repairs for chassis, flat-bed trailer equipment and all none self-propelled terminal rolling stock
  • Lead and supervise mechanic personnel in the repair service and maintenance of chassis, and flat bed trailers and other related equipment
  • Direct, assign and assist in the evaluation of mechanic personnel
  • Lead, supervise and work with mechanics in the performance of their duties
  • Overhaul, rebuild and repair container chassis and all other none self-propelled equipment, including but not limited to performing repair, chassis repair, suspension repair and electrical components repair.
  • Determine reason for part and component failures and replaces or repairs as required
  • Communicate with dispatchers and drivers regarding equipment damage or breakdown
  • Assist in the cleaning and organization of the shop, chassis parts room and other areas in the maintenance facility.
  • Maintain equipment records
  • Respond to container and chassis accidents when needed
  • Assist with shop related training needs
  • Coordinate shop work and determine priorities for mechanics, keeping the preventative maintenance program as the main goal
  • Manage M&R costs to budget and provide input to annual budgeting process.
  • Maintain documentation of preventive maintenance performed in the Distribution System Technology (DST) computer database or hand held computer
  • Perform mechanic skills including, but not limited to, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, & troubleshooting to repair tires, brakes, electrical lights
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times by cleaning, organizing, removing safety hazards, oil spills, spare parts, etc. within container chassis
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people checking equipment, etc.) at all times

Secondary

  • Operate material handling equipment (9K forklift) to move container or chassis as needed
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) program and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) inspections on all chassis or containers on an annual basis
  • Perform other related task as assigned

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Subject to physical and/or DOT Screening is required along with other test as applicable (DOT is required Only if operating equipment).
  • The employee is occasional, required to sit (while driving), grasp and exercise eye hand coordination and eye-hand-foot coordination. (If operating equipment).
  • The employee is frequently, required to grasp, exercise repetitive wrist motion, and finger movement
  • The employee is continuously, required to talk and hear
  • The employee is continuously, required to stand, walk and exercise repetitive foot motion
  • The employee is continuously, required to climb, balance, bend forward, squat, kneel, crawl, twist, pinch and reach overhead
  • The employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, push or pull up to 55 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from the Yard Superintendent, and indirectly from the Director of Terminal Operations.  Exercises supervision over mechanic personnel in the repair service and maintenance related equipment

 

CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed primarily in the shop/outdoors; exposed to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
  • Moderate vibration though hands when using power tools and throughout body when operating power industrial equipment
