POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is to support the Accounting Manager in carrying out the responsibilities of the Accounting department as directed and supervised by him/her. This position will have exposure to different areas within the accounting department. The position’s primary responsibilities are in preparing, analyzing, and recording journal entries in several areas, including but not limited to: fixed assets, account receivables, salaries and benefits, intercompany activities, general and administrative expenses, vessel operating costs including charter hire related expenses and payments, terminal and equipment estimates and expenses, cash applications, prepaid and other assets, and various liability and reserve accruals.  This position will also be involved in analyzing the account activity for many of the above listed areas and assisting accounting management with preparing analyses and working on ad hoc projects and other deliverables as necessary.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • A minimum of two (2) years as a staff accountant. Work experience at a $100 million revenue (or greater) for profit company is required (government or not-for-profit experience will not be considered).
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Accounting.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Intermediate Computer skills in programs such as MS Word, Excel & Outlook are required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish including both oral and written ability in both languages.
  • Ability to prepare a variety of reports and to examine and verify financial documents and reports.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment within established systems and procedures. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees, as needed.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills.  Must be able to prioritize and be detail oriented.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, multitask and possess strong initiative.
  • Ability to work extended hours, holidays and/or weekends, as needed.

Preferred

  • J. D. Edwards experience.
  • Experience in large multinational corporation.
  • Experience in public accounting.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Assists during month and month-end close with the recording of recurring manual journal entries.
  • Prepares and analyzes accounts reconciliations related to balance sheet and/or income statement accounts assigned.
  • Prepares reports detailing monthly/quarterly expenses and explaining variations.
  • Prepares monthly accruals, allocations and associated schedules related to expenses and cost of sales accounts assigned.
  • Compiles data for the preparation and analysis of reports.
  • Complies with internal controls to ensure compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
  • Performs self-review of work to identify problems and solutions.
  • Coordinate and assist to physical counts which may include fixed assets, spare parts, others.
  • Performs general accounting which may include analysis and reconciliations of liability accounts, which are estimate driven, or other areas assigned.
  • Works with domestic and Outport personnel on all above areas as necessary to include Latin America and the Caribbean.

Secondary

  • Performs ad hoc and special projects/analysis as needed.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
  • Cross-trains with other accounting functions.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use his/her fingers.
  • The employee frequently is required to look, talk and/or hear. 
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Reports directly to the Accounting Manager. 

 

CONDITIONS:

  • Indoors office.  Exposed to controlled temperature and office environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
